SUJET brings five completed short films into two days of private analysis, peer dialogue, public screening, and critical conversation.
The goal is not to rank the films. It is to understand what each film is trying to accomplish, how its creative choices function, and what the director can carry into future work.
A private session with five directors, two film analysts, peer feedback, and dedicated discussion of each completed film.
A theatrical screening followed by moderated conversations with the filmmakers, a film critic, and the audience.
A small cohort designed to give every selected film sustained, focused, and constructive critical attention.

SUJET is intended for emerging directors who have finished a short film and want to understand their work more deeply through serious, constructive conversation.
Previous festival screenings, grants, or professional recognition do not automatically make a filmmaker ineligible.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and currently reside in British Columbia.
Narrative, documentary, animation, and experimental films are eligible. The maximum runtime is 15 minutes, including credits.
Selected directors must attend the complete two-day Lab in Vancouver and be prepared to discuss their creative decisions openly.

Applications are now open for the 2026 Vancouver Lab. Five directors will be selected and notified through FilmFreeway by August 5, 2026.
Selected directors must confirm their participation by August 7 and attend the complete program on both days.
Day One: Saturday, August 22, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Day Two: Sunday, August 23, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Submit a completed short film of 15 minutes or less through FilmFreeway by Aug 5, 2026. The submission fee is CAD $15.

SUJET was developed through a Vancouver pilot that brought emerging filmmakers, film analysts, critics, and public audiences together through the same two-day format.
The 2026 Lab builds on that experience with a smaller cohort and more dedicated attention for each selected director.
The pilot combined a closed filmmaker roundtable with a public screening and critical conversation. Add the verified pilot date, venue, and number of participants here.
Directors’ Accountability Lab is led by SUJET Media Society.
Peliplat Network Inc. is SUJET’s venue and program collaborator for the 2026 Directors’ Accountability Lab.
The film may be finished. The work of understanding it is not.
